Renting safely

Most owners and agents are genuine. These habits protect you from the few who aren't.

Before you pay anything

  • Never pay a token amount, deposit or "booking fee" before you have visited the home in person.
  • Meet the owner or agent at the property, and check that the keys open the door.
  • Ask to see a document showing who owns the property, such as a recent electricity bill or property tax receipt.
  • Be wary of rent far below similar homes nearby, or pressure to decide "today".

When you agree to rent

  • Sign a written rental agreement that states the rent, deposit, notice period and who pays maintenance.
  • Pay by bank transfer or UPI to an account in the owner's name, and keep the receipts.
  • Record the condition of the home with dated photos when you move in.
